(Finally) Back to School!

After 3 months of striking, we finally returned to school this week!  Our start date was pushed back by 3 weeks to September 22!

Before the students arrived on Monday, I put numbered cards on the desks.  As the kids came in the door, I gave them a numbered popsicle stick and asked them to sit at the matching numbered desk.

In our district, elementary teachers keep their classes from the previous year for the first few days, so I decided to have the outgoing Grade 5's write a book of advice for the new Grade 4's. I grouped them based on the colours of their cards to create lists of things that Grade 4 students needed to know.  When we had a list of about 18 ideas, the students broke up into pairs to make pages for our advice book.

Be a participant.

Do your best!

Your work will get harder, but you can always ask your teacher for help.

Math is a bit harder but you can do it!

You are a leader, the younger kids will look up to you.
I'm so happy to be back in the classroom doing what I love to do!  I want to thank everyone who supported me (and all the BC teachers) during the strike - your support and love means everything!

A "Pinspiring" Week!

http://mrsplemonskindergarten.blogspot.ca/2014/09/positively-pinspiring-9314.html
I've been on Pinterest a lot this week (okay, okay, not just this week).  I usually tell myself I'll just go on for a minute or two, and an hour later I have 20 new pins and 100 new ideas!  I know I'm not alone in this, as Mrs. Plemons' Kindergarten is having Pinterest linky party! If you don't have an hour to spare, here are some finds I'd like to share, then head over to Mrs. Plemons' Kindergarten to see some more!

1. Using old calendars to practice descriptive writing.
This idea comes from 3rd Grade Thoughts and I absolutely love it!  Instead of throwing away old calendar photos, cut them apart and give one to each student.  The students needs to describe the photo using sensory details.  I can see this working for elementary and middle school writing classes!

2. Typographic Art.

This idea is beautiful!  Students use words to create a self portrait.  In the Pinterest picture, the words were cut from a magazine, but I can see expanding it to have kids write words over their images in specific colours, instead of colouring them in. (original pin found on graphictivitis.com)

3. Mint Cookie Ice Cream Cups.

Looks amazing!

4. Crayon Candles.

This looks so interesting.  I'm thinking this would make an excellent Christmas or Mother's Day gift for kids to take home.  It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to figure out...

5. Alphabet Kids Clip Art.
This is the new clip art set that I've made!  It has 4 images for each letter of the alphabet (2 colour, and 2 black and white)!  They can be used for classroom labels, word walls, name tags, etc.

What have you found that has "Pinspired" you?

Alphabet Kids Clip Art!!

I'm so excited to share my new clip art set with you!  When I started making these alphabet kids, I didn't really know what I was going to do with them.  Once they were complete, however, the ideas started jumping out at me!

First, I thought about nametags and desk nameplates.  The set has colour images and black and white.  You can print them in black and white and have the kids colour them in to save ink!

Then I thought they could be perfect for classroom labels.

And they would work great for schedule labels!

They would work really well for word walls and worksheets, too!
