Back to School Shopping!

When I was a kid, I always loved Back to School shopping!  My mom would take us to the store and we would each grab a separate buggy to fill with supplies (because, heaven forbid, any of my stuff got mixed in with my sister's or brother's!).  When we got home, my sister and I would pull out our bags and quickly set about labelling all our pencil crayons and markers well into the late hours of the evening.  I'd pack them into my new backpack and wait anxiously for the school year to begin.

Now that I'm grown up, I still shop for school supplies, and it's still so much fun!  I always get the same question from the cashier when she sees my full buggy: "How many kids do you have going back to school?"

This year I haven't stocked up on everything, but I did get a great haul at a great price from Walmart.

Here is a recap of my trip:

Binder paper was only 10 cents a pack, so I had to grab 10.
Total: $1.00

The notebooks were 5 cents each, so naturally, I bought 40.
Total: $2.00

Pencil crayons were only 94 cents a box!  (Usually they're about $5 per box).  I bought 10.  They also each came with a bonus pencil sharpener.
Total: $9.40

Each bottle of glue was only $1 (usually $3 each), and the glue sticks were $2 for a pack of 6 (usually $4).
Total: $7.00

Mr. Sketch markers were $7 for the pack (usually $9) and the packs of sharpies were $4 each (usually $7).
Total: $15.00

My total bill after tax was only $36.12!  Not too shabby if I do say so myself!  Have you come across any good deals in your back to school shopping?

A bit of summer fun

I know I've been away from this blog for awhile; I've been enjoying my much needed summer break!  This is the first summer since I was 16 that I haven't worked full time.  I've been working part time as a sub in a daycare, and it has been so much fun, but I've also had real summery days off!

I was excited about taking time off during the summer until the last few weeks of the school year when we were forced to go on strike.  I have definitely been hit financially, but the hot, sunny days are (almost) making up for it.

I've been spending my free days at the beach, floating on Lake Matheson, day camping, reading, hanging out with my nephew, going to movies, picketing, reading, making clip art, trying not to think about and plan for next year (technically I'm not allowed to do ay official planning, as I am on strike and locked out of the job), and relaxing.

Here is a look at my summer so far...

We've been having the most beautiful sunsets recently!

Last weekend, I went to a local music festival called Rock the Shores.  I volunteered last year, but this year, I just went as an audience member.  It was super, super hot for the 3 days of the festival, but I got to see amazing bands like USS, The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, Mother Mother, Loverboy, Current Swell, The Stanfields, and Our Lady Peace, to name a few!

There were up to 10,000 people in attendance on the final day of the festival!  It's exciting whenever we get any acts coming to Vancouver Island, but to have a 3-day festival with Billy Talent, Tom Cochrane, Gord Downie, and Our Lady Peace only 10 minutes from my house is really special!
USS put on a great show on Friday afternoon.

I was so excited for Our Lady Peace!  I'd seen them before this weekend, and they put on an amazing show.  The best part was that they still seem so grateful and happy to be playing.
I got sun stroke on the Friday of the festival and had to leave early.  This was me on the Sunday, hiding from the sun under my umbrella.  Temperatures were up to 28 degrees Celsius!  So hot, and no shade on the festival grounds!

I've also spent time at various watering holes!

Esquimalt Lagoon with the Olympic Mountains and Washington State in the background.  I love our island so much because I can go to this beach in February and walk along in a T-shirt when the rest of Canada is buried under snow!

This is Matheson Lake in Metchosin.  The other day, my mom and I decided to cool off from the 27 degree weather by taking floaties out to the island, watching the eagles soar above us!
My nephew, Caleb, on a boat at Pedder Bay in Metchosin.  My parents were camping here for the last week, and I was able to "day camp" with them.  It's only about a half hour drive from my house, so I went out a couple days before lunch, had all the feel of camping (fire, drinks, games, beautiful nature), ate their food, then left at around 9 or 10 at night.  I got to camp, but come back and sleep in my own comfy bed!  It's the perfect situation!
I love hanging out with my 4-year-old nephew, Caleb!
We were making our shadows do different moves.

He was practicing writing his name.  Then I practiced writing it!

My mom asked him to write Nana.  If you had a mirror, this would be perfect!

He loves the "Anti-Gravity" chair as much as I do, and he stole it from me!
And of course, I was out on the picket line.

Our premier, Christy Clark, is trying to ruin public education in BC.  She is sticking behind her illegal actions of raising class size limits, although her son is enrolled in a private school.  BC Teachers have been in the courts since 2002 fighting for better conditions, and despite 2 supreme court rulings in our favour, Clark and her Liberal Government have not reinstated the illegal policies.  We are in an ugly fight, and they refuse to negotiate with us at the bargaining table or agree to mediation without a long list of "pre-conditions."  I am not very hopeful at this point that school will be back in session in September.  I think the government wants to drag out this labour dispute as long as they can.

Digital Paper - I'm really starting to love creating clip art!

Hello everyone!

Now that I've started creating clip art frames and borders, I decided to try my hand at digital paper!  I've been in bed sick most of the weekend, but it has given me a chance to play around on Power Point to see what I can come up with.  So far, I have created three packs of digital paper.

The first pack is a multi-coloured polka dot set with 12 sheets of 8.5 x 11 paper.  I don't know if there is an easier way to create them, but I filled in each individual dot with colour by hand!  (If there is an easier way, please let me know in the comments!)

The second set is also polka dot themed, but this one is monochromatic.  It includes 16 pages of 8.5 x 11 inch paper.  Each page has only one colour with a white background, or white dots on a solid colour background.

The last pack is all about stripes!  It includes 30 pages of 8.5 x 11 inch paper.

Hello!  I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching's Five for Friday!  Here's a recap of my first official week of summer break!

Last weekend, I decided to try my hand at making clipart.  I played around on PowerPoint and created a few different frames and borders.  I've put them into my TpT store for free.  If you're interested, click on the images below and you'll be redirected to the download page!

I started my summer job yesterday.  For the past couple summers, I have subbed at a local daycare.  It's great to have this job for summer!  I'm only working part time, and it's a lot of fun to see younger kids learning about the world for the first time.  The centre I work for only has children up to 5 years old, so every day is definitely challenging, but I learn a lot about myself and about kids while I'm there.  My nephew, Caleb, is also a student at the centre, and I love spending as much time as I can with him!  ("Auntie, are you going to be my teacher today?")

If you are in the Victoria/Langford, BC area and are looking for daycare for your child, visit http://jennslittlebears.ca/ or follow them on Facebook here!

I saw a Pinterest post about making mini-books, and my creative side took over!  I made a template for my new Grade 4/5 class for September to introduce themselves!  I'm planning to have each of them make a "Me Book" and post them up on a "Meet Our Class" bulletin board!

You can get the instructions for this book here!

I have been spending so much time this week with my nephew, Caleb!  Tuesday was Canada Day, and we went to Fort Rodd Hill to celebrate.  On Wednesdays, I always have dinner with my parents, sister, and Caleb, and this week was no different!  On Thursday, my sister and I took him out of daycare early and we went swimming at Matheson Lake (the water was deliciously warm, but the wind and the beach were freezing!  We had to hide under the water to keep warm!) Yesterday, I got to spend the whole day with him at the daycare!  I'm a happy Auntie - 4 days in a row!

I have also been spending some much needed time alone, relaxing!  I started reading "Someday Someday, Maybe" by Lauren Graham yesterday and found some time to indulge at the beach!

Enjoy your weekend!
